SEPTEMBER 1951 This calendar looks a little worse for wear, and for good reason: It was found inside a wall during a bathroom remodel. Our thanks to Betty Howe of Forsyth for giving us this calendar. Until the 1960s, it was common for the Roxy to play three or four movies every week. Each show would play for two or three days. At least one double-feature would be presented every month. This particular month held no major blockbusters, but instead consisted of a lot of "B" movies -- shows that weren't expected to do great business, but would be good enough to draw in a decent crowd. An industry name for this type of film was "programmer" -- a movie good enough to fill your program, but nothing particularly special. When you are playing this many movies a month (and you don't have much competition from TV yet, and home video wasn't even a glimmer on the horizon yet), a few programmers never hurt. |
